Each element in the NHRI logo — fire, ginkgo leaves, a shield, and the sapphire-blue background — has a specific meaning.
Fire:
In Greek mythology, a compassionate, intelligent Titan named Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals for their use. Fire has long been used by chemists and pharmacists to transform chemicals and to help brew the ingredients of herbal medicine. The fire in the NHRI logo represents intelligence and knowledge, as well as energy and the transforming power of creativity.
Ginkgo Leaves:
The heart-shaped ginkgo leaf has been used in herbal medicine since ancient times and has been a symbol in Chinese culture of the medical profession since the middle ages. In our logo the leaves represent the spirit of Eastern medicine and compassion in the process of curing human diseases.
Sapphire-Blue Background:
Blue was selected because of its association since the French Revolution with liberty, which is fundamental to the rigorous methods that medical research requires.
Shield:
The shape of the logo symbolizes both the need to safeguard the freedom of scientific research and to protect the wellbeing of the people.
