Dr. Loh a graduate of National Taiwan University earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1965 from the University of Iowa and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco in 1967. He then joined their faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and established a successful career at the UCSF Medical Center. In 1989, Dr. Loh accepted the headship of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota. The year following his appointment as Head of Pharmacology, he was named Frederick and Alice Stark Professor in Neuroscience by the Medical School.

Dr. Loh’s scientific contributions have been numerous and varied, but have always focused on the fundamental aspects of opioid drug action. His research has provided fundamental knowledge in the neurochemical mechanisms of narcotic addiction and its treatment potential, the molecular nature of the opioid receptors and their gene structures, and the pharmacology and functions of endogenous opioid peptides. Throughout his career, Dr. Loh has published over 500 original research papers and has mentored approximately 30 Ph.D. students and 100 postdoctoral fellows. In recognition of his scientific achievements he has received several major awards in his field, including, most recently, the Founder’s Lecture Award from the International Narcotics Research Conference (2007); the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement (2007); the Nathan B. Eddy Award for Lifetime Achievement in Drug Dependence Research from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (2002); the Otto Krayer Award from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET)(1999), and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of American (PhRMA) Foundation Award in Excellence for Basic Pharmacology (1999). In addition, he is also a recipient of the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Award from Germany and elected as Academician of the Academia Sinica of the Republic of China in 1986.

Dr. Loh has actively served as a committee member for several professional scientific organizations. He is one of the three founders of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA), has served as chair for several NIH study sections and as an NIH council member for NIDA. He is the Associated Editor for the Annual Review of Pharmacology and Current Opinions in Pharmacology, and serves on the editorial board of more than 10 other scientific journals. Currently, Dr. Loh serves as committee chairman or scientific advisor to many universities, institutes and the governmental agencies in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
